Something beats inside
the soul, the way the heart
beats inside our chest.
While the mind plays its
melodies, the beat inside
returns us to whatever it
is we think we have lost.
This is the tuning fork
of the sacred by which
we find our way.
I felt it as a boy watching
the endless waves lap
against the bow of
our boat.
I felt it when I awoke
from surgery too soon
as the angels were stitching
the light of the world back
into my chest.
I felt it the day I knew
I loved you and there
was nowhere else to go.
I feel it now, every time
I see those I love soften
for no reason.
And just last night, when
our dog slept between my
wife and her dearest friend
as they listened to each other,
their hands in her fur, letting
her know it’s safe to rest in
the hammock of what is.
This is from my book of poems in progress, Suchness.
