Countenance (Who Do Others See in You?)

Countenance (Who Do Others See in You?) April 21, 2023

Proverbs 15:13
“A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.”

What do they see? What is my Countenance?

Expressions, visuals, and what others can see; we are mindful of such things all the time. However, we would rarely, if ever, use the word countenance to describe them. Indeed this word means “a person’s face or facial expression.” It is written here in Proverbs “A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance.” In other words, the things going on in our life are visible. Others can see our joy as well as our sadness.

I speak not of being a walking advertisement asking for compliments or pity but instead that we are mindful of the expressions we present as we see others. Life is life: I do not think anyone can genuinely argue that truth. This reality becomes more and more evident as time goes by. How we face this truth determines much of the results.

Does my countenance matter?

If we are the reckless, carefree, go-it-alone type, things will go in one direction. Likewise, life will go another way if we are the cautious, fearsome worrier. However, if we are a person of faith who trusts God and His plan, there is a third direction. This destination will show in our countenance. In other words (We can express peace and joy even in moments of sorrow, pain, and despair.) We do not try to impress or give over the idea that stuff still doesn’t happen; instead, we show that we can find Hope in our storms. It is possible.

Reality

I am not saying that we magically become immune to issues. I am not saying we will no longer have emotions or even disappointments. We do not stop being human upon the acceptance of Christ. However, we do receive His promise never to do it alone again. Such confidence, peace, and joy should be visible. Others should see the change in our life, which should reflect in our appearance.

So, how is your countenance today? Do others see your peace or despair? What reflections do others see? Do they see you or the Jesus that dwells in you? The answer to those questions is vital. There is no grey area; it is yes or no. We take notice of physical looks all the time. I say this respectfully, but cosmetically, people get noticed, whether attractive or not. However, expressions/countenance are often reflections of the soul.

If one is in a struggle, their plight is visible. The same is true of one who is at peace. The visual expression tells a story. Our countenance can be inviting or discouraging. The One who dwells within our soul can bring us cheer. He can give us the joy to share with others and let them know a better day is coming.

Challenge

Are we allowing the presence of God to change our expressions? Do we carry looks that show others there is Hope or that all hope is lost?

May the joy of knowing Him as Lord shine from within and allow others to see that Hope does exist.
