This May is Jewish Heritage Month, it is my personal heritage, one I continue to learn about
Heritage is a word that invites curiosity within me.
I enjoy following the roads of different cultures to learn about the various wonders of people.
I am fascinated by the treasures found in heritage.
It seems to me that they can be a good source of keeping people connected.
Sometimes, the wisdom heritage offers can be a valuable factor in unity.
We are privileged to have the riches of many heritages, in the United States.
The tradition of monthly celebrations dedicated to them is a genuine gift.
It is a beautiful celebration of America’s diversity and cultures.
This May is Jewish Heritage Month, it is my personal heritage, one I continue to learn about.
I was asked, why do we need a heritage month?
I was asked, why do we need a heritage month?
Without much hesitation the answer seemed to flow with ease.
“I believe that the more we learn about one another, both within our heritage and without, a peaceful society filled with compassion can flourish.”
I myself, continue to learn about the contributions of Jews to American society.
For those of you that are curious here are some interesting and fun facts about my Jewish heritage.
The importance of a Jewish Heritage Month, here in the United States, is greater today.
Being Jewish in America today has taken on a different tone.
In conversation with my niece in NYC today, I learned she fears to wear her Jewish star.
“I know that there is a burst of antisemitism, I don’t need to publicize my Judaism.”
I was extremely saddened to hear her words.
Because they were the same words I heard from my friend in Vienna, who I visited last month.
The importance of a Jewish Heritage Month, here in the United States, is greater today.
For it offers an opportunity to see what has not been seen and learn what has not been learned about American Jews.
Learn with me and remember to invite me to learn about your wonderful heritage.
I am a daughter of a Polish born Cuban Jew, and a German born Jew.
They experienced antisemitism and discrimination in America as well as the privilege of being able to worship freely and speak their truth.
They taught me to honor all faiths, to learn from them as well as teach them about my Jewishness.
This month, I invite you to celebrate with me Jewish Heritage Month.
